Buffalo Horse

$7,500.00

The Plains Indian culture revolved around the buffalo, and the horse added a new, exciting and productive way to hunt. Not only did the horse change their way to hunt, but it also allowed the tribes to cover greater distances in moving. The prized “Buffalo Horse” sculpture depicts a Sioux warrior leading the buffalo horse to the hunt. All tribes had strict rules followed by everyone involved in the hunt. The very special buffalo horse was seldom ridden the sometimes great distance to where the hunt began. The saddle on the pony horse is the prairie chicken snare saddle that served also as a pack saddle. The saddle on the buffalo horse is the ultra light pad saddle. The warrior carries the short heavy hunting bow and a quiver full of arrows.

The bow and arrow continued to be used long after the acquisition of firearms for their ease of use on horseback at a full run.The buffalo horse was often used in war and was the most valued of all the Plains Indian possessions.
